The Debate

Friday 13th July
The Debate
St. Victor’s School invited a team of 6 RLS students to pit their wits against a St. Victor’s team. Both teams enjoyed the support of their fellows, though the 250 St. Victor’s students did outweigh our crew. Nonetheless the debate was a lively one and focussed on the value of sex education in schools. The winner was not declared; but the debate certainly raised some strong opinions, lots of smiles and some laughter.

Hair-raising shock!

Friday 13th July
Hair-raising shock!
His mum will probably not recognise her son Nathan Treweek. Nathan, moved by the conditions at St. Jude’s School was determined, despite lots of counselling, to whip off his cherished pony tail. Nathan now resembles Hugh Grant with his shortened crop. The pony tail, on the other hand, rests resplendent in a plastic bag awaiting its sale – the proceeds will go to support local children. Mr Vaughan considered offering his crop, but was turned down!

From tea, to church, to footie.

A bright an early start saw the team walking to a tea plantation. From an hours picking to watching the tea maiking process, the morning was enjoyed by all. Mid-way through the plantation visit, Mr. V. was summoned to the local church, with Nathan Treweek accompanying him. “Oh Happy Days” went down well!

This afternoon the R.L.S. football team drew with the Ugandan team 1-1. Tonight, as we prepare to travel tomorrow to the safari, the choir has joined us for fun and games.

Apologies for lack of pictures, the website is playing up for us here in Africa.

What do you give a 130 year old?

Well, this afternoon we met a 70 year old, her 100 year old mother and 130 year old gran. Now it’s true to say birth certificates are short in supply, but they certainly looked their age.

The likes of cooking materials, soap and matches brought much gratitude.

However, Tom Whitworth was in for a surprise when he passed on some bras from home to be greeted with an offer from the recipient to model the 34C! As the lady was advanced in years Tom, the perfect gentleman, chose to decline. However, Tom remains keen to offer further support to the ladies of Uganda.

Make ready for a clean house, garden…

This morning we had a happy hour, working alongside students from HOY’S College cleaning the streets of Bukomansimbi. Bags of rubbish, in particular filled plastics, means a tidier street!

Fun at St Jude’s!

Our students very much enjoyed the interaction with students at St. Jude’s Primary School. The sense of enjoyment when the parachute emerged was clear to see on the faces of all involved including our 15 year olds!!!

Dancing, digging and having fun!

Hoy’s College students join us each evening for some dancing and games. Friendships are being forged and “Twister” has gone down a storm. As we write the Team is enjoying digging a further garden area. The work is hot and tiring but nonetheless rewarding.

Internet access continues to be limited, but we’re getting there.

Love from all of us, the Immodium Crew!
